It is vitally important to understand how torque helps you generate power for repeated strikes off either side. In a self-defence situation you must be able to deliver more than one strike per side, and this video lesson explains why.
This is a long lesson for anyone who has ever felt their power disappear after the first shot, or who can only hit hard with one hand.
The One-Shot Problem
Many people train power as one big wind-up from the back hand. It can be a strong strike, but it has two problems. It takes time to load, and once it is thrown you have to reset before you can throw it again.
In self-defence that is a gamble. The first strike may not finish things. If you then have to stop and wind up again, you have handed the attacker time.
What Torque Gives You
Torque is the twisting force your body generates by rotating around its centre. When you use it properly, the hips and torso turn and the arm is carried along, rather than the arm doing all the work.
The key point is that rotation can be used in both directions, and in short turns. That means:
- You can hit hard with either hand
- You can hit more than once from the same side
- Each strike can set up the next, rather than needing a full reset
- You need far less space and wind-up
How To Practise It
Start slowly and focus on feel:
- Stand relaxed, knees soft, weight centred
- Make small rotations of the hips and torso, letting the arms follow
- Throw a strike from each side, then two from the same side, without resetting your stance
- Keep the shoulders relaxed. Tension kills torque
- Use a bag or pads to feel the difference, rather than counting repetitions
The common mistake is muscling the strike with the shoulder and arm. You will feel tired quickly and the power will drop. Let the body turn and the arm will deliver it.
Why It Matters In Self-Defence
Being able to deliver repeated power from either side means you are not relying on one perfect shot. You stay balanced, you keep options open, and you can stop a threat and get away. Any force you use must be reasonable for the situation.
Take It Further
If you want to develop striking power, Power Black is the place to go. For using that power in self-defence, see the Pressure Point Self Defense Course.
