Sparring is the heartbeat of your training. In this video lesson I break down why. From light technical drills to situational sparring and beyond, sparring builds confidence, sharpens your skills and prepares you for real-world situations, whether in the ring or on the street.
It is for boxers, martial artists and self-defence students at any level, from complete beginners to experienced fighters.
Why You Have To Spar
My philosophy is simple. If you want to be a window cleaner, you clean windows. If you want to be a fighter, you fight. Drills, bags and pads are all important, but none of them hit back, move unpredictably or put you under real pressure. Sparring does.
Sparring is not just about throwing punches. It forges mental toughness and adaptability. It shows you what actually works for you, and what only works in a drill.
The Different Types Of Sparring
Sparring is not one thing. There are different types for different jobs:
- Light technical sparring: slow and controlled, to work on specific skills
- Situational sparring: starting from a set position or scenario, such as against the ropes or from a grab
- Restricted sparring: limiting the techniques so you focus on one area
- Harder sparring: closer to competition pace, for experienced people who are ready for it
Use the right type for what you are trying to improve. Most of your sparring should be technical and controlled.
Safety Is Non-Negotiable
No gear, no spar. Proper gloves, mouthguard and the right protective equipment every time. Spar with partners who respect control, and match the intensity to the experience level of the people involved. The goal is to learn, not to hurt each other.
How To Spar Smart
- Go into every session with something specific to work on
- Stay relaxed and breathe
- Do not try to win every round; try to learn from every round
- Spar with different people, sizes and styles
- Talk to your partner and your coach afterwards about what worked and what did not
Make every session count. Spar smarter, not harder.
