Most people think about head movement as defence: something you do when the other person is punching. In this video lesson I look at moving your head offline when you are the one throwing punches. It is a game-changer for boxers, martial artists and self-defence students.

As I say, even a moron will know where to hit you if your head stays in the same place.

Why A Stationary Head Is A Problem

When you punch, you are in range. That means your opponent can hit you too. If your head stays on the centre line while you punch, you are a sitting duck for the counter. Many fighters get caught exactly this way: they throw a good shot and get hit straight back because their head never moved.

Moving the head offline as you punch takes it out of the counter's path at the most dangerous moment.

Power, Speed And Safety

Moving your head offline is not only defensive. Done properly, it also helps your attack:

  • Power: moving the head with the body helps your weight go into the punch
  • Speed: a relaxed, connected movement is faster than a stiff one
  • Safety: your head is not where the counter is aimed
  • Angles: it often puts you in position for the next punch

This is why head movement and punching should not be trained as two separate things.

The Elements That Make It Work

Head movement does not work in isolation. It depends on:

  • Timing: moving at the right moment, as you throw, not after
  • Distance: being in range to land, but with somewhere to go
  • Angulation: moving off the line rather than straight back
  • Balance: keeping your weight under you so you can follow up

If any of those are missing, the movement becomes a guess.

Making It Second Nature

Start in shadowboxing. Every time you throw, move your head slightly off the line. Keep the movements small. Then take it to the bag and the pads. A coach holding pads can throw slow counters back at you so you feel why it matters. Finally, bring it into light, controlled sparring with proper gear.

For coaches: watch your fighters' heads when they punch, not just their hands. If the head stays still, that is the first thing to fix.

Train smart, drill it correctly, and become very hard to hit.
