This video lesson gives you a simple method to get started in basic boxing and fitness on the heavy bag. It is called bagwork for beginners, but it is not just for beginners. The same structure works for experienced boxers, because you can raise the level as you improve.

If you do not have a heavy bag, do shadow boxing instead. The principles are the same.

Why Bagwork Matters

The heavy bag is one of the best tools in boxing. It lets you practise punching with real contact, build power, improve combinations and develop fitness, all at the same time. It also teaches you to stay relaxed and keep good form when you are tired, which is exactly when technique tends to fall apart.

For beginners, bagwork is a great way to build confidence and fitness. For experienced boxers, it is where you sharpen combinations and build work rate.

How to Progress

The beauty of this method is that it grows with you:

  • The fitter you get, the more you move around the bag
  • The better you punch, the more you put into the combinations
  • As you improve, you raise the intensity and add more rounds

Start with a manageable number of short rounds and plenty of rest. Focus on clean technique. Over time, increase the work and decrease the rest.

Good Habits on the Bag

  • Keep your hands up and your chin down, even when tired
  • Move your feet, do not stand flat-footed in front of the bag
  • Bring every punch back to guard
  • Breathe out as you punch
  • Stay relaxed and let the body drive the punches

Common Mistakes

The most common mistake is trying to hit as hard as possible from the first round. You tire quickly and your technique falls apart. Another mistake is standing still and throwing single punches, which teaches you nothing about movement. A third is forgetting defence, letting the hands drop because the bag does not hit back.

Wrap your hands properly and use good gloves. A heavy bag can injure wrists and knuckles if you punch with poor alignment.

Shadow Boxing Instead

No bag? No problem. Shadow boxing uses the same rounds and the same progression. Focus on speed, movement and perfect form. It is excellent for fitness and technique.
