Understanding bodyweight connections, how they work and the relationships between single, group and whole body movements, is critical to developing your skills. In this video lesson I look at the differences between an arm punch, a punch with a step and a punch with whole body movement, and how to apply those principles to every technique you do. There is a lot of information in this lesson, so take the time to absorb it fully.

It is for boxers, martial artists and self-defence students who want to hit harder without simply trying harder, and for anyone who feels their strikes lack real power.

Three Levels of Movement

It helps to think of movement in three levels:

  • Single: one part of the body moving on its own, like an arm punch
  • Group: a few parts moving together, like a punch with a step
  • Whole body: everything connected and moving as one

An arm punch uses only the weight of the arm. A punch with a step adds some of the body. A punch with whole body movement brings everything into the strike. The difference in power is enormous, and it has very little to do with how big or strong you are.

Why Connections Matter

Power is not just about moving fast. It is about how well each part of the body is connected to the next. If there is a break in the chain, at the wrist, the elbow, the shoulder or the hips, power leaks out at that point. The arm moves, but the body does not follow.

When everything is connected, a short, relaxed movement can deliver a surprising amount of force. That is why smaller people with good structure can hit harder than big people who punch with their arms.

Apply It to Everything

These principles are not just for punches. Elbows, palm strikes, kicks, pushes and even locks all work better when the body is connected behind them. Take the time to apply this to each and every technique you do.

How to Practise

Start slowly. Throw an arm punch, then the same punch with a step, then with whole body movement, and feel the difference. Do it on the bag so you can feel the impact. Keep relaxed. Tension is one of the biggest causes of broken connections.

Take It Further

Striking power is the whole focus of Power Black. If you want to apply these principles to boxing technique, the Learn To Box Online Course builds them in from the start.
